{"id":28407,"date":"2019-07-10T05:39:06","date_gmt":"2019-07-10T04:39:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.digitalbusiness.africa\/?p=28407"},"modified":"2019-07-29T16:06:08","modified_gmt":"2019-07-29T15:06:08","slug":"itu-launches-new-report-on-artificial-intelligence-ai-in-broadcasting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.digitalbusiness.africa\/en\/itu-launches-new-report-on-artificial-intelligence-ai-in-broadcasting\/","title":{"rendered":"ITU launches new report on artificial intelligence (AI) in broadcasting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>[Digital Business Africa] &#8211;<\/strong> AI can optimize the process of making\nand distributing television and radio content, e.g. by improving workflows,\nquality evaluation and targeting of content<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bITU has just published this 29 May 2019 a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/pub\/R-REP-BT.2447-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">new report<\/a>&nbsp;that lays out how Artificial Intelligence (AI) could be used during the process of making and distributing television and radio content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report discusses how AI is\nnow being used to optimise workflows for broadcasting programme making, to\nimprove audio and visual quality evaluation, to efficiently utilize the\nfrequency spectrum in television and radio distribution and recently even to\ncreate new programmes by mining archives as well as automatically targeting\ncontent to specific audiences or individuals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, AI is being used for\nextracting content from vast archives; automatically localising content for\ninternational distribution; and generating access services such as captioning,\naudio description, text to speech and signing far faster and far more\naccurately than could be achieved in the past.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report \u2013&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/pub\/R-REP-BT.2447-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Artificial Intelligence systems for programme production and exchange<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 reflects the work ITU has been doing on these issues, profiting from the experiences of programme makers and broadcasters who are doing just that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cITU is collaborating with stakeholders to harness the power of AI to improve lives worldwide and seek solutions to the world&#8217;s greatest challenges,&#8221; said ITU Secretary-General Houlin Zhao. \u201cThis helps us to identify practical applications of AI that can accelerate progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which is what we are doing this week at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/aiforgood.itu.int\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">AI for Good Global Summit<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is still an incredible amount of work needed to ensure that the use of AI in programme making and content distribution is for the benefit of the audiences,&#8221; said Mario Maniewicz, Director of ITU&#8217;s Radiocommunication Bureau. \u201cWe also need to make sure that the systems employed interact with each other. This and other&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/pub\/R-REP-BT\/en\" target=\"_blank\">Reports<\/a>&nbsp;and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/rec\/R-REC-BT\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Recommendations<\/a>&nbsp;from ITU help to achieve that.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Study Group 6 expands work on AI<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ITU study groups are venues for ITU members to work collaboratively in responding to the priorities of the ITU membership. The groups develop the technical basis for ITU agreements and associated activities. Study groups of the ITU Radiocommunication Sector (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/en\/ITU-R\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">ITU-R<\/a>) address issues including the efficient management and use of the radio-frequency spectrum and orbit resources, radio systems&#8217; characteristics and performance, spectrum monitoring, emergency radiocommunications for public protection and disaster relief, interference-free radiocommunications, radio and TV broadcasting, and new radio technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The recent AI report is in response to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/en\/ITU-R\/study-groups\/rsg6\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Study Group 6<\/a>&nbsp;(Broadcasting Service) Question ITU-R 144\/6 on&nbsp;Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for broadcasting, which was approved in January 2019. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yukihiro Nishida, Chairman of\nITU-R Study Group 6 (SG 6), said \u201cThe use of AI is becoming essential for\nbroadcasting to increase productivity and reliability and is expanding its\napplications in the end-to-end chain of broadcasting, for which SG 6 is\nresponsible. It is important to understand the impact to broadcasting. SG 6\nwill continue the study to help broadcasters make maximum advantage of its\nuse.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Andy Quested, Chairman of the\nITU-R Working Party 6C that oversees the AI work, indicated that with the\never-expanding formats, platforms and regulations broadcasters are faced with,\nthere is a demand for intuitive and learning technologies to be a vital tool\nfor programme makers and broadcasters.
